Speaking at Wise Traditions 2010

I'm happy to announce that I'll be presenting at the Weston A. Price foundation's 2010 Wise Traditions conference. The conference will be held in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, Nov 12-14. The theme is the politics of food.

Sally Fallon Morell has invited me to give a talk on the diet and health of Pacific islanders. The talk will be titled "Kakana Dina: Diet and Health in the Pacific Islands", and it will take place on Sunday, November 14th from 4:00 to 5:20 pm. In preparation for the talk, I've read eight books and countless journal articles. Although some of the material will be familiar to people who follow the blog, I will not be rehashing what I've already published. I have nearly an hour and a half to talk, so I'll be going into some depth on the natural history and traditional food habits of Pacific island populations. Not just macronutrient breakdowns... specific foods and traditional preparation methods.

Bananas, Keep away from heart attack risk

Banana be cited as the fruit of life. Potassium content is pretty much contained in these fruits can lower blood pressure, heart health, and facilitate the delivery of oxygen to the brain. If blood, heart, and brain is interrupted, is not human life is threatened?

In addition, a high content of Vitamin A can increase the body's resistance to respiratory infections, scaly skin, and blindness. Another benefit, bananas can be a substitute for staple foods, thereby reducing the dependence of the Indonesian people against rice.

Humans have been eating bananas since time immemorial. Sad and Depression? Drink Green Tea

If you want to visit grandma or parents who are elderly, do not forget to give green tea as a souvenir. Research shows that elderly people who frequently eat green tea less often experience feelings of sadness and loneliness.

It was found that grandparents aged 70 years or older who regularly eat four cups more rarely have symptoms of depression are often perceived the elderly due to loneliness.
Benefits of green tea in lowering levels of psychological problems have been expressed by many of the data and literature.

Dogen Zenji on Nutritionism

Dogen Zenji was the man who brought the Soto lineage of Zen Buddhism to Japan. He was a prolific writer, and many of his texts are respected both inside and outside the Soto Zen community. Last week, my Zen group was discussing the Genjo Koan, one of his works that is frequently used as a chant. Here's an excerpt. It may seem cryptic but bear with me:
...when you sail out in a boat to the middle of an ocean where no land is in sight, and view the four directions, the ocean looks circular, and does not look any other way. But the ocean is neither round or square; its features are infinite in variety... It only look circular as far as you can see at that time. All things are like this.

Though there are many features in the dusty world and the world beyond conditions, you see and understand only what your eye of practice can reach. In order to learn the nature of the myriad things, you must know that although they may look round or square, the other features of oceans and mountains are infinite in variety; whole worlds are there. It is so not only around you, but also directly beneath your feet, or in a drop of water.

What Dogen meant, among other things, is that the world is much more complex than what our conscious minds can perceive or understand. It was true in the 13th century, and it's still true today, despite our greatly expanded understanding of the natural world.

We can apply this principle to nutrition. For example, what is red palm oil? Two hundred years ago, perhaps we only knew a few basic facts about it. It's a fat, it's red, it comes from an African palm fruit and it has a particular melting point and flavor. Then we learned about vitamins, so we knew it contained vitamin E, carotenes (provitamin A), and vitamin K. Then fatty acid composition, so we found out it's mostly palmitic and oleic acids. Now we know red palm oil contains an array of polyphenols, sterols, coenzyme Q10 and many other non-essential constituents. We don't know much about the biological effects of most of these substances, particularly in combination with one another.

Add to that the fact that every batch of red palm oil is different, due to strain, terroir, processing, storage, et cetera. We know what the concept "red palm oil" means, roughly, but the details are infinitely complex. Now feed it to a human, who is not only incredibly complex himself, but genetically and epigenetically unique. How can we possibly guess the outcome of this encounter based on the chemical composition of red palm oil? That's essentially what nutritionism attempts to do.

To be fair, nutritionism does work sometimes. For example, we can pretty well guess that a handful of wild almonds containing a lot of cyanide won't be healthy to eat, due at least in part to the cyanide. But outside extreme examples like this, we're in a gray zone that needs to be informed by empirical observation. In other words, what happens when the person in question actually eats the red palm oil? What happened when a large group of people in West Africa ate red palm oil for thousands of years? Those questions are the reason why I'm so interested in understanding the lives of healthy non-industrial cultures.

I'm not criticizing reductionist science or controlled experiments (which I perform myself); I just think they need to be kept in context. I believe they should be interpreted within the framework of more basic empirical observations*.

One of the most important aspects of scientific maturity is learning to accept and manage uncertainty and your own ignorance. Some things are more certain than others, but most aren't set in stone. I think Dogen would tell us to be wary of nutritionism, and other forms of overconfidence.


* Wikipedia's definition of empirical: "information gained by means of observation, experience, or experiment." As opposed to inferences made from experiments not directly related to the question at hand.

Green Tea Making More Powerful Antibiotics

Thousands of studies have revealed that green tea is healthy and natural beverages rich in antioxidant content. Usefulness were so diverse, ranging from cardiovascular health maintenance to reduce the risk of cancer. Green tea also has a positive influence for antibiotics. Green tea can increase the efficacy of antibiotics in killing bacteria resistant to 3-fold, even though super germs.

In Asia, green tea is favorite drink, Not even half-hearted, they often drink it with drugs such as antibiotics. Researchers interested in seeing whether green tea may reduce, increase, or did not affect the performance of antibiotics.

The result is surprising, according to study results green tea can enhance the ability of antibiotics against resistant bacteria, even though super germs.
In every particular case, green tea proven to increase the activity of antibiotics kill bacteria. For example, the effect of chloramphenicol kills bacteria better than 99.99 percent while drinking green tea compared with no use it.

The research also found green tea are able to make 20 percent of resistant bacteria become susceptible to cephalosporin antibiotics, an important type of of antibiotics to overcome bacterial strains that had become resistant or immune.

The researchers added, almost in every case and all types of antibiotics they tested, giving antibiotics with green tea increases the antibiotics work, and reduce drug resistance in bacteria. And for certain cases, green tea with a low concentration though still effective.


Their results indicated that we should seriously consider it more natural ingredients that are consumed every day. In the future we will look for and investigate natural materials such as majoram and thyme. It is necessary to examine whether they also have an active substance that helps fight bacteria resistant to drugs.

How many times Must Drink Green Tea Every Day?

Many people still confuse about how much green tea that should be taken everyday to overcome their health benefit for us. Does a cup of green tea is enough? Or may be we need to take more? this articles is explaining about how much cups of green tea should we drink to get its beneficial effects. 

There are no side effects of drinking green tea. The only problem that might cause to our health will occur if green tea is taken over the daily recommended levels. Experts recommend at least 3 cups of green tea per day to effectively lose weight. Taking over 6 cups a day can cause palpitations (when you can hear your heart beating or irregular heart beating) due to caffeine overdose. 

The average cup of green tea contains anywhere from 8 to 20 mg of caffeine, while black tea contains at least twice that amount -- 40 to 60 mg. Soda contains between 40 to 60 mg and a cup of drip coffee has a nerve-jangling 90 to 150 mg, more than half the amount of caffeine that some people should consume in a whole day. Overdose (quantities more than 300 mg caffeine, more than 5 cups/day) can lead to negative effect on the CNS and irritation of the stomach. 

Most of the research showing the health benefits of green tea is based on the amount of green tea typically consumed in Asian countries-about 3 cups per day (which would provide 240-320 mg of polyphenols. A cup (200 mL) of green tea (Gun Powder, Hangzhou, China) contains about 142 mg EGCG, 65 mg EGC, 28 mg ECG, 17 mg EC, and 76 mg caffeine. 

Recent studies on 1003 subjects over age 70, comparing their green tea intake and mental sharpness, using a Mini-Mental State Examination, a well-accepted standardized test for measuring cognitive function. Drinking more than 2 cups a day of green tea slashed odds of cognitive impairment in elderly Japanese men and women by 64%! And a Japanese cup of green tea is much smaller than its American counterpart-only about 3.2 fluid ounces. 

And at every level of cognitive impairment-from minimal to severe-those drinking the most green tea experienced significantly less mental decline than those drinking the least. Compared with elderly Japanese who drank less than 3 cups a week, those drinking more than 2 cups a day had a 54% lower risk of age-related declines in memory, orientation ability to follow commands and attention. Those drinking 4 to 6 cups of green tea a week (1 cup a day) had a 38 lower risk of declines in brain function


Green Tea May Protect Brain from Lack of Oxygen

The fans of green tea should be grateful because the compounds found in green tea may protect the brain from the effects of sleep disorders that cause snoring and stopped breathing.

Component or active ingredient found in green tea is suppose to ward off nerve damage due to breathing disorder that occurs in those who experience sleep disorders. Similarly, a study of the animal.


The scientists found that when they add the antioxidants contained in green tea drink that is given to the mice seem content of these chemicals protect the brain these animals when deprived of oxygen that is designed similar to the symptoms that occur due to the effects of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or sleep disorders.

These findings suggest that components in green tea should be taken into account for further investigation as a potential therapy for these sleep disorders (OSA).


OSA is a temporary disruption that occurred in the soft tissues of the throat. This disorder causes respiratory tract obstruction during sleep. As a result, there was briefly stopped breathing during sleep several times during the night.

Symptoms usually appear soon a loud snoring sound that goes with chronic and panting and occurs not only during sleep tonight, but also during naps. If not handled properly, OSA may cause disruption throughout the body, such as increased blood pressure. Moreover, the lack of oxygen supply to the brain can come up with memory impairment.


However, it turns out, the component in green tea called catechin polyphenols was found to protect the brain from lack of oxygen. Catechin polyphenols act as antioxidants. These elements help to neutralize the particles cells damaged by free radicals. Free radicals are a byproduct of metabolism that cause oxidative stress when excessive.

Lack of oxygen also causes oxidative stress that lead to cognitive impairment in those who experience sleep disturbances.


When the mice were in crisis because of lack of oxygen for more than 14 days is a sign that oxidative stress occurs in the brain, the brain is protected and not declining function in a meaningful way due to water containing green tea polyphenols are given. While the mice not given green tea conditions are opposite.

A regular intake of green tea is the standard treatment that can be used to treat OSA. Even so, is clear evidence that green tea can help OSA disorders should be tested further with a try it on humans.
